Isn't there an insurance company that uses information from a secret box to know if you tailgating and how fast you come to a stop?

It might help in those "no fault" accidents when no one can seem to determine who was at fault...

Spies? As long as they are not any more intrusive (to privacy) than they are they serve a valuable purpose. Auto safety engineering.

I don't see anything wrong with idea. They're just not telling all the next few steps> Next: will be a regulation (note,, not legislation) that all auto mechanics will read the codes and turn them over to a combined Federal, State and Local Law Enforcement Agency. Any instance of any speed over the maximum speed limit will be prosecuted to the full extant of the law. Next: this information will be turned immediately over to you insurance company so they can arbitrarily raise your raise retroactively. Next: a federally mandated governor supplied by a manufacturer that contributes the most to political campaigns will be installed on your car at your expense. Next: there will be a link from the gestapo right back to people like me who dare to protest this abomination!!!

I will agree with it only if I have a choice if its turned on or not or to have it installed or not..Should not be forced on everyone...Just another way for the government to spy on you...

I didn't see the added cost to a vehicle price? This may be a good thing because if there are no witnesses to an accident, at least this would record the event. The data may provide some valuable clues regarding a defect in the vehicle. Haven't you ever had a problem and even the dealer doesn't believe you.

These things can be useful in several ways, including protecting you in the event that you are sued after an accident that was not your fault or ticketed for something that you didn't do. I think that all cars and trucks should be required to have them.

What do you care who gets the data? What do you have to hide? The data is of no import to you!

NOTE: this is not the complete article...its much longer but the link goes to another link to get to Detriot news that's the source...people should watch what they're posting here & post the link to the article itself. Misleading is impression of binring in a black box....we have it today in almost all modern cars. How much is recorded highly depends on how much is computer controlled, but its there to some extent. It is not 'big brother watching' as many say as it cannot be read outside the car (its not the GPS many think of with this) or even the OnStar that can be hacked...it's local. It's also not just good for 'discrepancy in what a driver claims happened and what NHTSA concludes' but also with mfgr & to aid mfgr in determining fixes. Had Toyota opened up its system, it would likely know exactly what is wrong with acceleration rather than guessing & if as open as other mfgr's then wouldn't look so secretive on the investigations. Have not only refused/avoided court order black-box readings but have lied in the past on what is recorded since now showing readings for things in cars few yrs back they said in court cases was not recorded. This is not sowing good faith in customer safety. But article is right...Toyota is still a good co. with good products with recalls becoming avg for a firm all at once. I might even buy a used Toyota down the road, should their depreciation become avg or higher.

Insurance companies are using them also for DUI's & frequent fender benders to save moeny. People get a test before the key will work, if they fail - NO DRIVING. So they borrow a neighbor's car to drive wrong way on freeways to kill folks.

Who gets access to the data? And when? Might be of great use in a fatal auto crash, but it should not be used for ever little fender bender.

There are good things and bad things associated with these so called black boxes. If they can prove that there is a problem with a car or truck they are a good idea. But we don't need big brother always looking over our shoulder either.

Knowing GM (Gov't Motors) would support such legislation. I, as a private citizen, don't want another intrusion by government, but if only the last few seconds of operation are recorded it could clear up a lot of litigation. That's another area I'm against. Lawyers!

Unless it is limited to something along the lines of storing only 5 minutes of info, then no. They don't need to be prying into what people have been doing over time.

I'm not surprised that Government Motors is in favor of this. It's probably a government initiative. So what does this data recorder consist of? In addition to taking data off the CAN bus, will it also have a 3 axis accelerometer in it? I can see where this might help prevent fraudlent lawsuites against a manufacturer, however.

INTERESTING. GM IS BEHIND THIS BECAUSE IT CAN BENEFIT THEM AND MAYBE NOT THE CUSTOMER. BUT THEY ARE AGAINST THINGS THAT DO NOT BENEFIT THEM THAT ARE GOOD FOR THE CONSUMER.

This is a case of big brother versus getting accurate information in disputed accidents. This is hard one. Yet I think the benifits out weight the potential problems. I think cars should have such a device.
